THE PRIME MINISTER, summing up the discussion, said that the Committee were agreed that we should proceed with the project definition stage of the Anglo-French variable geometry aircraft on the basis proposed by the Defence Secretary and the Minister of State for Technology. Final decisions on this and other aspects would not be taken until Ministers considered the results of the defence expenditure studies as a whole and

they would then wish to look separately at the proposed military aircraft programme. For this purpose it would be valuable if the Defence Secretary would circulate at an early stage a paper setting out the proposed aircraft programme and describing the roles of the various types of aircraft in it.

The Committee

(1) Agreed that we should embark on the project definition

stage of the Anglo-French variable geometry aircraft on the basis set out in OPD(67) 35.

(2) Invited the Defence Secretary to circulate a menorandun

on our proposed military aircraft programme on the lines indicated by the Prime Minister in his summing up of their discussion.
